Amsterdam Nightlife Guide
Nightlife in Amsterdam is everything but bland. With a reputation for being one
of Europe's most happening party places, a night in Amsterdam will leave you
with memories both wonderfully weird and outrageous.
There are a good number of music clubs in Amsterdam, and many of them carry
a strong support for relaxing jazz music. Most cabarets, clubs and theatres have English-speaking staff and a lot of these clubs not just offer drinks, but also a
sampling of Hollywood blockbuster movies on television. The dance clubs may pale
in comparison to those in New York but the brown bars are typically Amsterdam.
There is quite a number of restaurant/bars/club hybrids here it would
seem, especially since over the recent years, city projects have been geared
towards the building and renovation of townhouses into clubs.
The establishments open at around nine o'clock and are closed by five in the
morning, as stipulated by law. The best nights in Amsterdam are Thursdays and
Saturdays. Some clubs demand casual dressing and there or have this "no jeans
allowed" policy. As everyone should know, the use of drugs is accepted and legal
in Amsterdam. Some establishments, including coffee shops, even offer this on
their menu. Alcoholic drinks and drugs, however, are only made legal to those 18
years old and above.
At the Rembrantsplein-Leidseplein district is where you will find all the live
bands and dance clubs. The Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal district is where most hip
and trendy bars and restaurants are. Reguliersdwarsstraat has the most radical
and progressive establishments. The gay scene and the deviants are very much
accepted in this area. Nieuwmarkt is relatively a new district and provides an
alternative choice. But if you're looking for something seamier, the Walletjes
or the Rosse Buurt is the best place to be. These are the red light districts.
BARS
• De Waag located in the red light district is a popular bar where cultural
numbers are part of the nightly entertainment.
• De Stil is a haven for whisky lovers. They offer over 100 kinds of whiskies.
If you're not a whisky lover, the staff and owners will be more than willing to
guide you through the stages of discovering your possible love for it.
• Satellite Sports Café is a place where football and rugby enthusiasts would
prefer to hang-out.
CLUBS
• Paradiso and Melkweg are clubs that have been around for so long that it has
become one of the most comfortable places for anyone to hang-out.
• Rembrandtplein 11 is a very big dance club venue. It holds a very popular
weekly dance party called "Chemistry" (held every Saturdays) with many famous
international DJs as guests.
LIVE BANDS
• Blues Club or the Bourbon Street Jazz, both located in Leidsekruisstraat, are
two
of the most recommended places.
• Oude Schans is where the Dutch Jazz Orchestra performs on Wednesday nights.

Amsterdam also has casinos, if dancing, drinking and music are not your brand of
night time entertainment. The Holland Casino Amsterdam located at Max Euweplein
62 or the Holland Casino Airport (passports required) at Schiphol are two of the
most popular ones. Smart casual dressing is required of these establishments and
those below 18 years old are prohibited from entering the premises.
